Brentford
« on: October 06, 2017, 12:58:54 am »
A life-long supporter of Brentford FC, when Mark Warburton got us to the play-offs I dared to dream. Then as usual the curse of the play-offs struck and we lost out to Middlesbrough who in turn lost out to Norwich.

Last season was quite good but this year - terrible! I win and 6 draws and 4 defeats!

I am very worried that we will be facing a relegation battle this season rather than challenging for promotion as we did a few years ago,.

And so it goes in sports, mike.

As a long time fan you know you cannot win every season.

Just like my NE Patriots cannot win every season. Or my Boston Red Sox.

But I stay with them season after season...win or lose.

Is that not what a true fan is?

Very true, Andie!

But as you say that's what being a loyal fan means - through thick and thin!

I vividly recall some years ago when we were on the verge of being relegated to the Conference (non-league sides). We were bottom of what is now League Two (in those days the Fourth Division) and miraculously we escaped by the skin of our teeth.

Since then we've been promoted twice and we're now is the Championship (what used to be the Second Division.)

But every time we get into the play-offs we lose - eight times in a row now!

Gee. Eight times in a row.

So sorry.

But again. That is what makes a true fan mike. Thick and thin.

My Red Sox went from 1918 to 2004 without the World Series.

But they have no more avid fans in baseball.

And before Tom Brady the Patriots were hardly the stars. they are now in the NFL.

That was a very long time coming .

Add the Chicago Cubs in baseball. They waited even longer than the Red Sox. I was actively rooting for them to win.

I was so very happy when they did. My husband thought I was nuts.

He was looking for  Cubs jersey to show up any day on our front porch. ( No...I did not go that far.)

You have to stick with your team, otherwise you are no supporter.

And with me...the Patriots and the Red Sox til death.

Probably be in a nursing home with a Pats cap on in the winter and a Sox cap on in the summer.

Plus a pennant hung behind my bed and alternating nighties.
